Iron Ore an overview

Steel finds its use in the construction industry, automobile industry, machine manufacturing industry, can and container manufacturing, appliance manufacturing, as well as in number of other important heavy industries. Iron chloride is used in sewage treatment systems, as well as in paints and textile colorants. Wrought iron is rust-resistant, and is therefore favored for use in creating household furniture and fences, while cast iron has traditionally been used to prepare kitchen utensils and cookware. US iron ore mining is dominated by the Precambrian banded iron formation deposits around Lake Superior, in Minnesota and Michigan; such deposits were also formerly mined in Wisconsin. For the past 50 years, more than 90 percent of US iron ore production has been mined from the Lake Superior deposits. None of the iron ore now mined in the US is “direct shipping” ore ready to be fed into the iron- and steel-making process. Banded iron formations (BIFs) are sedimentary rocks containing more than 15% iron composed predominantly of thinly bedded iron minerals and silica (as quartz). Banded iron formations occur exclusively in Precambrian rocks, and are commonly weakly to intensely metamorphosed.

Above approximately 10 GPa and temperatures of a few hundred kelvin or less, α-iron changes into another hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure, which is also known as ε-iron. The higher-temperature γ-phase also changes into ε-iron, but does so at higher pressure.

How is iron ore used?

Many analysts agree that demand from China ultimately determines iron ore prices. Although the European and North American marine ooidal deposits have been geochemically well characterized in the past, their economic significance has decreased. It is the new, giant terrestrial ooidal deposits of Western Australia, which had previously received little international interest, that now represent economically significant examples of this iron ore type.

When people become deficient in iron thanks to insufficient dietary intake (iron is found in meats, particularly organ meats, as well as certain grains) or systemic disease states, their RBCs cannot do their job properly. In this condition, called anemia, people become short of breath after a modest amount of exertion, and often suffer from fatigue, headaches and general weakness. In severe cases, a blood transfusion may be required to correct the anemia, although typically correction is done using supplementation with iron-containing pills and liquids. In deeper or better equipped mines, the coal baskets or corves were hoisted up the shaft using a windlass, later horse-driven gins.

When you ponder the origin of iron, your mind likely wanders into visions of steel mills, medieval-age forges or some other manufacturing process characterized by hard, hands-on work and very high temperatures.
